Season 1, episode 11: DiabeteSpeaks is a special project of T1D Exchange and the Glu community--join us and become part of type 1 diabetes research today: visit www.myglu.org. Steve Richert talks with Adriana about the cultural barriers she faced with her family after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and how her passion for fitness and weightlifting have helped her with diabetes management. In addition, Adriana shares the difficulty of going through periods of time without any insurance and limited access to healthcare, and it affected her A1c. Despite challenges, she finds strength in a positive outlook, and credits the online type 1 community for much of her education about T1D. "About two years ago I got into weights. I realized that I could really control my blood sugar while exercising, and I really liked that.  So I guess I like that I can lift heavy things for a few reps, but I like that I can control my blood sugar. It’s like I’m not even diabetic during that time."
