Season 1, episode 10: DiabeteSpeaks is a special project of T1D Exchange and the Glu community--join us and become part of type 1 diabetes research today: visit www.myglu.org. In episode 10, Steve Richert talks with Andres, whose parents came to the US from Mexico. Andres talks about family dynamics when cultural barriers are involved, and being confronted by diabetes myths right in the emergency room when being diagnosed with type 1. Three years after diagnosis, he finds a tangible way to take it all into account: "My mom hadn’t thrown away any of the needles because she didn’t know where to recycle them. I was like, 'Hold on to them, because I want to do something with it.' I was going to pour them in the huge pile, and I have every single need that I’ve ever used since I was diagnosed for three years, just so that people can see that it –– it’s tangible. This happens every single day, and has been happening every single day for three years of my life."
